Replacing A Spindle

To replace a straight, thin spindle, drill through rail and spindle. Slip old spindle out and new one in.

To replace a contoured spindle, cut a small patch to remove it; then insert new spindle and patch.

Before patching the rectangle, be sure there's enough area on each side of the mortise for a strong facc-to-facc glue joint. Glue in the patch, plane it flush, and finish the new wood to match.
