hardens chisels in three zones with the hardest being at the tip.

After hardening, the chisels are tempered to 400° to 450° in an oven and then cooled slowly to room temperature. This removes the brittleness left by the heat treating process but doesn't affect the hardened zones.

If you glue up the strips in the sequence they come off the saw, the glue lines will be hard to detect, making the finished brace look like a solid piece of wood.

^v My friend claims the steel in a woodworking chisel gets soßer the J arther you get from the edge. I argue that may be true of old chisels and new ones that are tempered by hand, but factory-made chisels today are the same hardness throughout because they're tempered in an oven. What 's the truth?

George Boyd Jamaica, NY

A Your friend is essentially right—woodworking chisels do get softer the farther you get from the edge, but the degree to which this is true depends upon the type of steel used and how it was hardened.

Routing Mullions Safely

Ql'm making a corner cupboard with a glass door. How can / rout tfje small muntins and mullions and still maintain my fingers?

J. Albert Hud son Knoxvi lie, TN

A There are two profiles you rout on a muntin: the ogee profile on the facc and the rabbet for the glass on the back. You can help stabilize your stock for both cuts with a push slick and a feather board. Size the push stick so you can hold it Hat against vour router table fence and use it to m direct downward pressure to your workpiece as you feed it past the bit. (See aw »27, page 29.) The feather board, or wooden spring, (see page 27) will direct pressure to the side of the workpiece to keep it from rotating.

When cutting the glass rabbets, attach a strip of wood to the outfeed side of your fence that is the same size as the rabbet you're cutting. This will provide a runner for your newly created rabbet to ride on as it exits the bit.
