My shop, for example, buys and makes a lot of molding. We store it in a horizontal rack (see photo, right) like the trim-molding rack at my lumberyard, but my compartments are smaller and there are a lot more of them. You can make smaller-scale racks especially for scrap sticks by building cages of wire fencing or even stacking PVC pipe with sticks stored not only in the pipes but between them.

I chose horizontal racks because the molding I deal with is too long to store vertically. Yet vertical racks arranged in aisles have advantages. They can have open fronts so they're easier to clean and sort through, and gravity files things to length automatically. Also, vertical racks won't tie up the workshop the way horizontal racks will, where you need about as much free space in front as there is inside to maneuver long sticks.
