Feeler Gauges

At each end of the straightedge, insert equal thicknesses of feeler gauge between the straightedge and the table. Try different thicknesses until the straightedge barely touches the tables at the cut-terhead opening. (Sec drawing.) New jointers should be no more than .006 in. out of flat along the length of the tables. As much as .010 in. out of flat is acceptable for a used jointer. To check for warping, repeat this test, placing the long straightedge diagonally...

Here's another type of puzzle a wooden puzzle that's meant to be taken a pail and reassembled again and again to test just how clever you are. Making this puzzle is a matter ol preparing a wooden cube and bandsawing out the puzzle pieces from two sides of the cube in two separate steps. It's fairly easy to make, but not so simple to solve. Look at Fig. 2 and the photos,...

Oseberg Ship Measurements

N the popular image of a Viking ship burial, .the fallen chieftain sets off on his final voyage into a blazing sunset as his proud ship blazes up around him. Fortunately for us, the Oseberg ship was not burned but buried under a mound at Slagen in southern Norway, becoming the final resting place for two Norse women. When excavated in 1904, it turned out to be one of the great archaeological finds of all time. See sidebar, page 29 . Not only was the ship itself found almost intact, but it was...

Oh. there might be a few individuals with time on their hands who enjoy smoothing wood with sandpaper, but I don't know any. That endless rubbing gets old fast. And sanding is a pretty crude operation scratching and tearing the wood fibers, rather than severing them cleanly as, say. a hand plane would do. Yet, sanding surely has its place. It's relatively easy, fast, and if done correctly by progressing from coarse grit to fine grit, sanding can produce a...
