The Voice of Experience
Bringing expert woodworking to life
As I watchcd Toshio Odatc at our recent American Woodworker Show™ in Detroit, I was mesmerized by his consummate skill and patient attention to detail. With a crowd of admiring showgoers looking on, Toshio deftly cut and hand-planed dozens of tiny pieces of clear pine to make up a traditional flower-pattern lattice for a shoji screen. The audience smiled approvingly as he slid each piece perfectly into place. It seemed they were envisioning themselves doing the same thing in their own shops.
Later that afternoon, an old-timer walked over to our workshop and said, "You guys sure know how to put on a show. I've been to every woodworking event in these parts for the past 25 years, and I've never come away as inspired as I have today."
When I asked him what impressed him the most, he replied, "The live demonstrations. I learn the most when I sec experts actually doing the things they write about in your magazine."
Most woodworkers never get the opportunity to learn from—and be inspired by—professional craftsmen at work. That's where we come in. American Woodworker magazine is dedicated to bridging the gap between you and the experts by delivering clear, reliable explanations and the kinds of valuable insights that only experienced woodworkers can give. We rely on your feedback to let us know how we're doing.
As 1997 draws to a close, the staff at American Woodworker would like to thank you—our readers, online visitors and showgoers—for making us your source for woodworking information. We pledge to keep bringing you the best mix of projects, techniques and woodworking news in 1998 and beyond. Happy holidays from all of us to all of you!
