Upended Grinding

I've found a way to grind planer and jointer knives quickly and accurately by turning my small 5-in. motorized grinder on end. First I bolt the grinder securely to an L-shapcd plywood base

#20 tap, thread each hole at least halfway down. Drop a -Vl6-in.-dia. steel ball bearing into each hole, followed by a small compression spring, as shown in the drawing. A sctscrew holds everything in place. With a pair of spring-actuated balls taking up the play between miter bar and slot, you'll never be troubled by sloppy fit again.
