Edge guide. This accessory attaches to the router base and acts as an adjustable fence. If your router doesn't come with an edge guide, buy one for it. Use it for all kinds of edging and straight-line work—even mortising, with a plunge router.

router to work like a shaper. You can buy an aftermarket router table, or make your own. (See AW #44.)
Some routers have variable speed control, which gives an extra measure of safety and control. For single-speed routers, a variable speed control unit is available from common mail-order catalogs.
Template bushings. A set of bushings enables you to do pattern routing. Many router jigs also use template bushings to guide the router.
