Carpeting is normally used in living rooms, bedrooms, family rooms and occasionally dining rooms. In rooms such as kitchens, laundry rooms or other areas where water damage or staining is likely to occur, carpeting should be avoided. When carpet is desired in such areas, a synthetic-fibre type should be used. For hygienic reasons, carpet is not recommended for use in rooms containing a toilet.

Carpeting should be installed over a panel-type subfloor or an underlay. Except for cushion-backed carpeting, felt or polymeric carpet underlay should be used.
