Hardboard is also produced in sheets with a variety of finishes and may be applied over sheathing or to unsheathed walls. The minimum thickness of sheets should be at least 1/4 in. (6 mm) on supports that are not more than 16 in. (400 mm) on centre. It is fastened to the framing member or to sheathing with corrosion-resistant nails at least 2 in. (51 mm) long. Nails are spaced 6 in. (150 mm) along the edges and 12 in. (300 mm) along intermediate supports. A gap at least 1/8 in. (2 to 3 mm) should be provided between sheets.
