Ratio of Risetorun

The relation between the rise and the run should conform to well-established rules. Experience has shown that a rise of 7 to 7 1/2 in. (180 to 190 mm) with a run of about 9 3/4 to 10 '/4 in. (250 to 265 mm) combines both comfort and safety. These dimensions are commonly used for main stairs.

Although the dimensions presented above may be considered desirable, space does not always permit their use. If such is the case, the following limitations should be observed: all stairs should have a maximum rise of 7 7/8 in. ( 200 mm), a minimum run of 8 1/4 in. (210 mm), and a minimum tread width of 91/4 in. (235 mm). As well, stairs should have a rise no less than 5 in. (125 mm), a run or tread width no more than 14 in. (355 mm). These dimensions apply to stairs serving only one dwelling unit.
