Cordless Power!

Eighteen-volt cordless tools have been trickling into the marketplace for the past few years, but get ready for a flood. By the spring of 1999, almost every major power tool brand will offer 18V drills, setting a new standard for power. Other new cordless tools include three 18V circular saws and two jigsaws: one 18V from DeWalt and one 14.4V from Makita.

Also, more cordless tools will offer the option of using nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, which promise a longer run time and less weight than standard nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries. NiMH batteries are available now from Makita and Bosch; Hitachi and DeWalt will offer NiMH in the spring of 1999.

Here's a peek at the new high-power players in the cordless market. (At press time, prices on some models aren't determined. Prices will vary because many models are sold as kits, including different combinations of batteries, chargers, and accessories.)
