But it takes a lot of dowels about 3.000 to form a 5-in. thick, 12-in. square turning blank. Anyone who's had a glue-up go awry when clamping up a few furniture components can imagine the potential nightmare of juggling quarts of glue and thousands of dowels. The job actually isn't that bad with a simple clamp press form that holds the glued dowels. I'll describe later how to make it. 'Ihe form also enables you to mix various-colored dowels randomly'or in more definite rows or...

Sharpening A Hollow Mortising Chisel

Ask five people how to sharpen hollow chisels and you'll get five different answers. Here's one way that works well for me. Buy a small cone-shaped grinding wheel and check that the tip matches the hollow chisel. To get a picture of the interior geometry, press the end of the chisel into modeling clay (or Play-Doh*). To sharpen the chisel, reduce the speed of the drill press to near 500 rpm, and put the grinding wheel in the chuck. Holding the hollow chisel vertically, press the business end up...

Mortise And Tenon Drill Press

And then I'll describe the various machines that do the same job. Any machine involves some setup time. If you have only a few mortises to deal with, it's often quicker to mark them out individuallv, drill out the waste, and chisel to the lines. If you don't have a drill press, a self-centering doweling jig speeds the work and keeps holes square to the surface. If you already own a drill press, consider buying a hollow-chisel mortising attachment to go with it. This attach- mcnt consists of a...

Most woodworking glues will work, but I prefer Weldwood Plastic Resin glue available at most hardware stores and woodworking-supply stores . Weldwood fills gaps, is easy to mix, and will absorb some color from the dyed dowels. There is a drawback with this type of glue. A 70 minimum temperature must be maintained for the glue to cure properly. To be safe, 1 keep the temperature at the glue line about 80 by surrounding the press and form with six 100-watt light fixtures. See...

Woodenvise Hardware

You can't buy a wooden-jaw vise and simply bolt it to your bench like you can a metal-jaw vise. A wooden-jaw vise must be built into a bench. When planning your workbench, buy the vise hardware first, and then work out the design details to accommodate the hardware. Bcnch-scrcw assemblies arc available for each type of wooden-jaw vise face vise, tail vise, shoulder vise, and leg vise. See Figs. 1 and 2. These assemblies come with the bench screw and nut and guide rods if applicable for the type...
