Wooduni

Stargazing Woodworker

"My shop has more than 100 drawers to store all the parts and special tools for my projects," says Tom Clark of Chiefland, Fla. Tom got hooked on woodworking while pursuing lifelong interests in building telescopes and radio-controlled model airplanes. "I needed storage cabinets," he explains, "and my woodworking just took off from there."

Tom's freestanding 40-ft. x 60-ft. shop includes well-lit workstations for intricate work and open space for large assemblies, because some of his telescopes are as large as cars (to see one, visit www.floridastars.org/icons/yardscope.jpg). Tom's woodworking machines are clustered for efficiency. His shop-built air cleaner sits right where it's needed—next to his workbench. Tom also designed and built the lift-top router table, as well as many furniture pieces in his house. Tom describes his furniture designs pragmatically: "In my life, almost everything Tell LIS about has been square." And his next project? "A real airplane!"
