Laminate can be trimmed either flush or to one of several bevel angles, depending upon the purpose of the edge. For example, if you are applying laminate to plywood panels that will be joined together into a cabinet, you will trim the laminate flush with the plywood's edges. However, if the laminate is the top surface of a counter, you will probably bevel it.

The difficulties you have in making these cuts is influenced by the work location. If you are constructing laminate-covered cabinets in your shop, you'll have an easier time than if you are building them at the installation site. The same is true of laminating a countcrtop: It's easier to do in the shop.

The work sequence and the trim cuts you make will, of course, be affected by the edge treatment you've selected. The self-edge has laminate applied to it. and that laminate is applied and trimmed before the faces of the panel or counter are covered. Edge banding of natural wood can be applied either before or after the laminate, yielding two different appearances.

Laminate work doesn't require spe-cial bits, although they are available. Any carbide or carbide-tipped bit mil cut through laminate just line. The several laminate-covered router labletops presented in this book were actually trimmed with a standard 45-degree chamfer bit.

The typical Hush-trimming bit— .he one you get in a bit set—has avo cutting edges about 1 inch long and a '/>inch cutting diameter. For trimming laminate, this bit has a couple of shortcomings.

• You don't use more of the cutting edges than the Y» inch closest to the pilot. The risk in extending the bit too much is that it will Scuff the face of the laminate, especially if the router is hobbled momentarily.

• The two cutting edges won't give you the finest possible finish.

If you do a lot of laminate work, you may want to buy a real lami nate trimming bit.

Bit manufacturers with a base of commercial and industrial customers usually make an assortment of laminate-trimming bits. Most of these bits have /«-inch shanks, for use in laminate trimmers. The cutting-edge length is % inch or less (remember the overall caveat to always use the

shortest cutting edge that will do the job). The n-.ost economical are the double-flute style. For better finishes, they also make bits with three and even four flutes. A range of bevel angles arc available, including flush. 7 degrees, 15 degrees. 25 degrees, and occasionally 45 degrees.

In some cases, the bits arc assemblies, and the cutters can be interchanged. The advantage here is that you need buy only a single arbor, even though you get several cutters. It isn't likely you'll be using more than one cutter at a time.

To eliminate marringof the laminate's finish, a few manufacturers are now making Delrin-rimmed pilot bearings available. Delrin is a synthetic material similar to nylon and will leave no marks on the material being cut.
