Frank Pollaro discovered the veneered furniture of Jacqucs-

Emilc Ruhlmann as a high-school senior in Orange, NJ.

Ruhlmann's well-proportioned curvcs and intricate inlay derails are just as awe-inspiring today as they were when the French designer made his mark as an Art Deco master in the 1920s. "It was seven years before I had the nerve and the skill to build my first Ruhlmann piece," says Pollaro.

Today Pollaro's excitement for veneer is stronger than ever. His company, Pollaro Custom Furniture, has built a reputation for combining exotic veneers with precious metals and fabrics, including shagreen, the polished skin of a shark or a ray. His most recent adventure is the "Art Case' grand piano shown at right, which he veneered for the famous Stcinway & Sons company. The one-of-a-kind model took more than 700 hours to complete and is covered in ebony and rare amboyna burl. Other work includes a reception desk for the headquarters of Jim Hcnson Productions (See photos, above and opposite.) To portray the familiar Sesame Street gang, Pollaro and partner Dan Gordon inlaid more than 100 species of veneer onto three panels, selecting natural wood tones to suggest color, shading, and depth.
