Hand Position

Grasp the chisel handle with your rear hand as you would a knife. To pare short distances like a tenon cheek, use an underhand grip with your forward hand. Anchor your knuckle against the workpiece if you can. Support the blade from underneath with your index finger. To help control the cut, press down on the blade with your thumb. To pare long distances like a chamfer along a long board, use the overhand grip shown with angled paring. The overhand grip is also good for paring in the middle of a board.

Hold chisel handle like a knife handle.

Use underhand grip for short distances.
