A lot of furniture is ruined by removing the finish in an effort to restore the piece. Antique furniture 100 vears old or more is most valuable with its original finish therefore, whenever it is possible, any work on an antique should involve bringing the finish back to life without taking it off. I call this process restoring the finish. And restoration doesn't stop with just antiques Any type of furniture can be restored without removing the finish as long as the wood below isn't damaged and...

Building this box is a good exercise in 18th-century cabinet construction. The carcase and drawers are dovetailed together, while the dividers are-joined by shallow dadoes. The box sits on a base frame with ogee bracket feet. And the door overhangs the hinge side of the cabinet but is inset on the lock side, a design feature typical of this genre. I used 16-in.-wide cherry boards for the primary wood, choosing carefully for grain and color. The 16-in. width made it possible to fashion all the...

Shopmade Turning Tools

Over the years, I've found that some of my best turning tools arc made from things I have ly ing around the shop. Pictured here are several tools made from alien wrenches, nails and screwdrivers. They are easy to make (Second row, left in photo.) To make a bent t< x> l from an Allen key, first turn a handle from medium-density wood. The handle should fit your hand about 4 or 5 in. long is good. Drill a hole in the handle the same diameter as the cross section of the alien wrench. Then tap...

I would encourage you not to miss such opportunities. As a rule, I avoid using wood that has structural flaws, although I've made exceptions on pieces I've built for myself, such as my coffee table. The three top boards of my coffee table were so deeply and naturally checked that they begged to be...

As a kid I was always building something or other, using bent nails, tree limbs, orange crates and gobs of shellac. I'd just get something in my head and figure out how to make it. I'd never heard the term designer. Even now. I'm a bit intimidated when I consider myself a designer. It's as though I'm supposed to know some great secret that others don't. I'd rather think of myself as a builder of furniture. As a builder, I don't feel that I have to know all the answers before I start I'm free to...

He had to face a decision I could struggle along as a woodworking novice or quit my job to leam the fine techniques of furniture making at a proper school. This bent-laminated side chair leaves little doubt which path he chose. Using mostly liand tools, he made the chair over a five-month period at the North Bennct Street School in Boston, before graduating in July 1993. The chair's...
