Hot Linseed Oil Finish

I love the look and feel of oiled wood. Oil finishes penetrate deeply to accentuate the grain and figure of wood, yet they don't build much thickness on the surface, so the wood still feels like wood. Here's how I apply my oil finish First I heat the linseed oil to about 120 in a pot on an electric hot plate, outside my shop. Heating the oil makes it penetrate deeper, giving the wood more depth and color. Caution Hot oil is a fire hazard. Heat only over an electric hunter outside your shop....

These salt and pepper shakers arc well within the grasp of the intermediate turner, though they're a cliailenge. I've designed some templates that make it simple to produce a perfect sphere, and you can make the small tools for working the inside from alien wrenches and old screwdrivers. (Sec sidebar, page 41.)_ The elegant design of these shakers comes from the purity of the spherical forms, the use of beautiful wood and the offset holes, which add some personality to the forms. This pair is...

Shopmade Turning Tools

Over the years, I've found that some of my best turning tools arc made from things I have ly ing around the shop. Pictured here are several tools made from alien wrenches, nails and screwdrivers. They are easy to make (Second row, left in photo.) To make a bent t< x> l from an Allen key, first turn a handle from medium-density wood. The handle should fit your hand about 4 or 5 in. long is good. Drill a hole in the handle the same diameter as the cross section of the alien wrench. Then tap...

The Pennsylvania spice box is a wonderful example of regional furniture development. Originally intended for storing spices which were so rare thev liad to be kept under lock and key in Colonial days these miniature cabinets were made and used in many parts of the country. But nowhere did the style evolve or persevere as it did in the Delaware Valley area of southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly Chester County. Pennsylvania-style spice lxjxes began with William & Mary examples around 1680,...

As a kid I was always building something or other, using bent nails, tree limbs, orange crates and gobs of shellac. I'd just get something in my head and figure out how to make it. I'd never heard the term designer. Even now. I'm a bit intimidated when I consider myself a designer. It's as though I'm supposed to know some great secret that others don't. I'd rather think of myself as a builder of furniture. As a builder, I don't feel that I have to know all the answers before I start I'm free to...
