Biesemeyer Model

Bill Biesemeyer developed the first aftcrmarkct rip fence about 14 years ago. It was designed for the rigors of production woodworking shops, but it's appropriate for amateur shops as well. It has been a huge success—onlv a few refinements have been made over the years.

The Biesemeyer is the Mack truck of fences with thick, square steel tubing for the front rail and fence. The fence is 2x/i in. high and 42 in. long, overhanging the outfeed end of the saw table.

The Biesemeyer Model 50 fence locks in position by a cam-action clamp that tightens on the front rail only. Hie fence's far end rides on a small nvlon

pad, but never touches the rear rail, which is included only to provide solid mounting for the outfeed table and side extension table. A 10-pound side load caused a 0.(X)8-in. deflection at the far end of the fence.

secure, and when unlocked, the fence lifts right off the rail. I'nlocked, the fence skews a bit on the rail as it's adjusted quickly left or right.

Installation required about two hours, including time to drill mounting holes in the saw table. It's necessary to get the front rail mounted at exactly the right height to ensure proper clearance of the fence over the

Bicsemcver offers extension tables 0

and an auxiliary fence for clamping on jigs and using dado blades or molding cutters ($119). Other rails with rip capacities to 122 in. are available.

Biesemeyer also offers a less expensive, lighter-weight home-shop version of the rip fence with 52-in. rip capacity ($279).
