If the Biesemeyer is the Mack truck of fences, the Excalibur is the luxury sedan. Its suspension system makes it the smoothest to operate of the fences I tested.

The Excalibur fence is a 44'/*-in. length of anodized, extruded aluminum. 2k in. high. The rails are also extruded aluminum with T-slots on the back for the mounting bolts.

The fence is suspended on three spring-loaded aluminum rollers (two in front, one in the rear) that ride on the rails. This "triangulated" setup ensures that the fence always stays parallel to the blade—even when unlocked. The locking handle has three positions; down to lock the fence, horizontal to adjust the fence, and up to remove the fence completely.

Unlocked, the fence glides effortlessly. The rollers pull in tight against both front and rear rails to lock the fence in place. A 10-pound side load resulted in just 0.0005-in. deflection.

Installation took about three hours. I had to drill new holes, then loosen

the Unisaw's cast-iron table and tilt it up to gain access to the inside to put nuts on the rear rail-mounting bolts.

For this system to work up to snuff, the rails must be installed perfectly straight and parallel to one another. It takes patience to get this right. On our Unisaw the left table wing protruded slightly beyond the saw table's rear edge. I ended up fussing for lialf a day shimming the rear rail parallel to get the fence tracking smoothly. Once done, it worked beautifully.

Accessories include a St<xk Pusher (S64.95) (see photo), and a set of
