wiping varnish or an oil-varnish blend by pouring a little on a piece of glass and letting it cure overnight. After curing, an oil-varnish blend will be-soft enough that you can dig your fingernail into it, and it will wrinkle.

Wiping varnishes cure hard and almost totally smooth.

How They Protect the Wood

All four types of "oil * finish — straight oil, polymerized oil, wiping varnish and oil-vamish blends—protect wood in the same way that lacquer, shellac, paint and all other finishes do. They seal the pores and build a film on the surface of the wood. Oil finishes do not protect the wood from the inside, as vou often hear.
