Tom Whalley had just been put in charge of managing records at his Army base in Germany when he realized there was a major problem: Nothing was in order. He soon fixed that.
"I got a couple of privates in there and I told them, 'Men, we're going to dump out every record onto the floor, and then we're going to sort them out and arrange them. And we're going to spend all night doing it.' " And so, the military was introduced to quite possibly woodworking's quintessential "organization man."
Years later, when Tom and his wife, Kathie. built their home in Urbandale, Iowa, Tom made absolutely sure he designed his woodworking shop to be the definitive word in efficiency.
