Building a Tote with a Coopered

Mark Ncls, of Atlanta, Georgia, the maker of the handsome, coopered-lid tote shown in the photos on the facing page, makes his living installing commercial high-end architectural woodwork. Nels decided he needed a new box for his hand tools on the day he realized that either his long-time toolbox■ was getting larger and heavier or he was getting decidedly less enthusiastic about lugging it around. Also, he noticed that his tools had been changing over the years: His big Yankee screwdriver and pair of bulky panel saws had been replaced by a cordless drill (in its own box) and a single, small Japanese saw. His old toolbox was not only too big, it was obsolete.
