DESIGN NOTES Radley built the cabinet out of Honduras mahogany, ash, and curly and stained ash veneers. 1 le determined the overall width of the cabinet by the size of the pieces of veneer he had, calculating the maximum size of the door from the width of one piece of veneer. Two doors equaled the width of the cabinet. He determined the maximum practical height of the tool chest by the length of "his outstreched arm, and the depth by the length of the hand planes he wanted to store in the top of the chest. I le set the depth of the doors to the width of the widest tool he wanted to hang on the door, and made the lowest measurement of the chest correspond to how far he was willing to bend over to get tools out of the bottom drawer.

The interior layout was developed through a series of thumbnail sketches, but the final layout wasn't established until after the cabinet was assembled. Like tools are grouped together: layout tools in one area, saws in the next. Radley lay the chest on its back with the doors supported in the open position and then started placing the tools inside. Gravity held them in place while he shuffled them around until he had them all organized in the least possible amount of space.

Clustering the eight small tool drawers at elbow level makes them easy to see into, and to remove for sifting through at a bench. (Note that the finger-pull holes are drilled large enough to accommodate a gloved hand.) To ensure that bulky tools would be easy to get at, Radley arranged them on quick-release brackets in the boxed upper-cabinet panel doors. His clever arrangement maximizes the number of tools fixed to the doors without interfering with access to them. No tool need be moved in order to get at another. Radley also carefully thought out the placement of his planes, setting the heaviest at the mid-height of the cabinet while sliding the rest into pigeonholes marching across the top of the case. Stops prevent the shorter planes from getting lost toward the back of their holes. Finally, note how Radley placed up to 18 chisels in a stepped bracket arrangement—though crowded, each handle is visible and readily accessible.

Decisions about joinery were next. When planning the construction methods for the tool cabinet, Radley was after sturdiness, and he also wanted to show off the effort that would go into the project. Thus he decided on through dovetails and through-wedged tenons.
