Next, consider how you will carry the box. If the lid opens to sit on top of the box, you can plan to install handles at either end. To make the tote compact for transporting, choose campaign-style handles that recess into the sides. (Though they protrude more, you can substitute fold-down chest handles to save a little money.) If your box allows a top-mounted handle (because the lid folds down, not up), you can make one from a pole, running it from end to end like the handle of an open shoulder tote. Alternatively, you can buy a steel or brass handle from a builder's supply store. To make sure that the metal handle won't pull out under the load of a tote crammed full of tools, substitute through-bolts for the attachment screws typically supplied with this hardware. Although leather briefcase-type handles offer perhaps the most comfortable grip, most are not sturdy enough for a toolbox.
