W W feels right, like paring with V V a good, sharp chisel. In \ f these days of laser printers, a turned wooden pen is a perfect way to personalize your writing, and of course, it would make a great gift for school graduations, Father's Day or for any busy executive.

wooden barrels that you turn on the lathe. A brass pen tip, pocket clip and two thin brass tubes to line the inside of the wooden barrels are also included in the kit.

A turning mandrel is another specialized piece of hardware you'll need to buy. (Sec Sources.) The mandrel is used to mount the wooden pen-barrel blanks in the lathe's headstock for turning. Without this special mandrel, it's nearly impossible to turn the wooden pen barrels thin enough. The mandrel comes in two different styles—with a Morse taper for mounting directly in the headstock, or a straight stub for mounting in a three-jaw chuck or a Jacobs chuck in the head-stock. You can choose the type of mandrel mounting best suited to your lathe setup.

Turning the Wood Pen Blanks

STEP 1. Mount a wood barrel blank (7« in. sq. and 5 in.

long) between centers on a lathe, and rough turn it to a cvlinder ]h in. in diameter.

When the blank is turned to shape, take it off the lathe and saw it into two pieces—each about 2lh in. long. If you're turning more than one pen at a time, mark these two shorter barrel blanks, so you can identify them later as a pair. You want their grain to match when you put them together to make a pen.

STEP 2. Drill a 7-mm dia. hole down the center of each of the barrel blanks. Mount the round blank in a three-jaw chuck in the headstock, and drill the blank with a 7-mm bit (see Sources) mounted in a Jacobs
