Buying wood

If you buy kiln-dried blanks, then make sure that they are completely sealed so that they cannot take in moisture. It is always very tempting to buy expensive blanks with attractive grain colour and figure, which greatly enhance the final turned piece and make it a more desirable objcct. And it is certainly true that a fancy gram sells better than a plain one. But a mistake on an expensive piece of wood is an expensive mistake and, when you are learning, it is more likely to happen because the value of the wood gets in the way of your turning development. While learning, use cheap or free wood so that it doesn't matter if you make mistakes when the Tool touches the weed. While the equipment will have cost quite a lot ot money, it is worth remembering that you could spend just as much, if not more, on wood in the first ten years of turning.
