Squaring the end

1 Line up the bevel square to the lathe axis.

2 Chamfer 60° - sheer peeling cut.

As general procedure with: 1 Line up bevel with angle of chamfer.

Smoothing and shaping cuts - (sheer peeling cuts): This is a cut to make a long smooth finish on spindles, curves and beads particularly soft woods.

Chamfering with the curved edge skew.

Warning

Make sure the chamfer angle is at least 20° before using a straight edged skew for this cut.

Power grip and fingers with arm over hcadstock.

Keep the cutting at least '/»in (3mm) away from both the top and bottom points. If the top point touches the wood, then the result is a dig in. If the bottom point touches the wood, the quality of the finish is slightly reduced. As the wood gets slim, the support hand can be moved to support the wood with the fingers while the thumb rests on top of the tool.
