We should think of tool sharpening as part of overall tool maintenance and care; it is the key to plea-surable and productive woodturning.

Tools not only become blunt with use. but they can also get out of shape; edges can be accidentally damaged. A tool may need reshaping to change its cutting characteristics, even from new. Keeping tools in shape is just as important as sharpening. Shaping and sharpening are similar metal removal processes; pressing the tool against a moving abrasive surface, or rubbing the tools against an abrasive surface creates the same final result - a well-shaped and sharp cutting edge.
